G ma and the beach

Yesterday, our first full day in Encinitas, we visited the infamous Christinia Charnow (also known as G ma). Dude, G ma rocks! She paints, she hulas (like, hard core hula. She's been teaching classes for 60 years). I wanna be just like G ma when I grow up.

Max's favorite of G mas paintings- Lazy Polar Bears.

Lotsa lotsa leis!

Ducky statues from LA

See ya later G ma. We're off to make bloody marias, and watch the sunset.

The final Tally

The long anticipated final tally on millage for the trip.

Sam "I AM" Stavis: 4,4,643.9 miles

Erin "Word Machine" Charnow: 663.2 miles

Max "The Chauffeur" Stavis: 5,307.1 miles

Morgan "Asian Zero" Winter: 0 miles (and damn happy about it)

THE LONG HAUL

There was a moment, walking down the streets of San Fran, when I accidentally got stepped on twice by max (who was wearing Doc Marten boots, and I was wearing open toed sandals). I bent down to rub my toes, while violently sucking in my breath with the pain. As I hopped around with one foot in hand, trying to massage my poor tootsie, my sunglasses fell off of their perch on the neck of my shirt. I guess I must have looked pretty pathetic, because Sam and Erin both decided that it was time to get me the hell off of the road already!

So, we made the decision to skip camping in Big Sur and haul ass to Erin's house in Encinitas (just north of San Diego).
After breakfast with Noah in the morning, we were all packed and on the road at 11:30 AM.

Stay classy, San Francisco.

Special Pretzel <3
(yes, I ate him. Don't tell his friends.)

Look at this fuzzy guy!
Our only detour was to Carmel, in Monterey. I insisted that we visit. After all, my lovely big sister was named after this place. I also have a conspiracy that she was conceived here on my parent's honeymoon.
(Aww and a little ick!)

Carmel is a very cute resort town. Like the Hamptons of the west coast. Expensive and swanky, and chock full of charm.

The Town hall
It was just cool seeing Carmel's name everywhere! She always complained growing up that her name never came on those souvineer pencils or little license plates or notepads or anything that they sell in gift shops, and more or less we could always find stuff that said Morgan on it (although sometimes it was intended for a boy).

So, Carmelita, in order to fill the void left by lack of cheesy gifts/ souvineers with your name printed on them, I looted a giftshop called "Carmel Forecast" for you.
I don't want to ruin the surprise, but heck, here's what I got you:

- an awesome yellow tee shirt that says "Carmel"
- a trivet with a cool ceramic tile in it with a scene of Carmel
- an oven mitt
- a magnet with an otter on it. The otter has it's arms streched out and it says: "Carmel, I love you THIS much!"
- a magnet that is filled with little seashells. Muy precioso.
- A 2010 Carmel, CA calendear

What? 3:45 pm ALREADY?
Back on the road! Enough futzing around. We got places to BE, man.
Enjoy the desert scenery.

mucho mucho moo moos

mucho mucho oil rigs
as far as the eye can see...

sunset. on the road.

Passing though LA. No time to stop!
NOW ENTERING HYPERSPEED!

Just a little further...

We made it to the Charnow residence around 10:45 pm. We were sitting in the cars just after we parked, when we heard cheering and hooting. "You're here! What are you doing down there! You made it!"

San Francisco

Almost there...
Hello, foggy Golden Gate bridge

The man, the myth, the legend
Noah Charnow

Throwback pictures (awww)

The view from the roof

San Francisco had the coolest murals and graf art everywhere. The houses are all painted these pastel colors, too.

Walking down Haight street
This area I assume is pretty touristy. It reminds me of the Village in New York, except that the streets are alot wider, and there are tons bums, dogs, and hippies. I mean A LOT of hippies. I always wondered where all those dread- headded children of the Grateful Dead/ Jam band scene all went after festivals and concerts and whatever (where I'm used to encountering them). Seems that this is where the headquarters for hippies is located.

Playing dress up in a head shop

"Check out this shirt i just bought"

Okay, Charnow sibling number two in a pink cowboy hat (flip back to the corn palace post to see the first Charnow sibling in a pink cowboy hat)
Two down, two to go!

Jimi Hendrix mural

The infamous 710 Ashbury. The dead hung their hats here around 1967.

Hippies. They're everywhere, man...
Chillin in Dolores Park

Here we are passing a porn palace. No joke!

A night of drinking in the Tenderloin

Glenn Goldman (AKA "Double G")

Thanks for showing us around town, fearless leader Noah.
Also, for taking us to get the most awesome Vietnemese food (dubbed "Tofu Sandwich World"; we have no idea what the real name of this place is, but boy was it tasty).
See you in a couple of weeks!
